A Life Story Book for Grandparents

If you’re looking for a life story book for grandparents, can I tell you something first?

My Gran Anne lived in South Africa for much of her life. She made the most wonderful biscuits. We never knew their real name… we just called them “Anne’s biscuits” and left it at that.

I asked her for the recipe once. She sent it over on a small piece of paper. Handwritten, from the other side of the world. I was a teenager at the time, and I did what teenagers do… I shoved it in with my stuff and forgot about it.

I’ve never found it since.

The biscuit recipe is a small thing. But it represents something much bigger. All the things our grandparents carry in their heads… the stories, the memories, the little details of a life lived over 70 or 80 or 90 years… that only exist because they remember them.

When they’re gone, all of that goes with them. Unless someone thinks to ask.

The joy of capturing family stories

Why grandparents, specifically

I think there’s a particular urgency with grandparents that doesn’t exist in quite the same way with parents.

With your Mum or Dad, you assume there’s time. They’re still around, still active, still telling the same story about the caravan holiday in Wales for the fourteenth time. You think you’ll get round to it.

With grandparents, you can feel the window closing. They’re a generation further away. Their memories are older, more fragile, more at risk. The world they grew up in is so different from ours that their stories feel almost like history… because they are.

And here’s the thing that catches people off guard: grandparents are usually delighted to be asked. Most of them have spent years assuming nobody was interested. Life gets busy for everyone… their children are juggling work and families, their grandchildren have their own lives going on. And then someone says, “Gran, tell me about when you were young.” And they light up.

A life story book for grandparents: how it works

YourStory is a book of guided questions, of their choice, that your grandparent answers at their own pace. Questions about their childhood, their school days, how they met their husband or wife, what their first job was like, what they remember about the war or the sixties or the winter of ’63. The big ones about what life has taught them. The small ones about their favourite sweets as a child.

They can start with our Perfect Path… a set of 10 popular questions to get going without any overwhelm. They add photos. And when they’re ready, we print it as a large-format hardback. Nearly A4. A proper coffee table book.

The words in the book are theirs. We don’t use AI to rewrite anything. Your Gran’s way of telling a story… the digressions, the asides, the way she says “and then you won’t believe what happened next!”… that’s exactly what goes in. Because that’s what makes it hers.

What if they’re not comfortable with technology?

This comes up a lot, and it’s a fair concern. Not every 80-year-old is comfortable sitting at a laptop.

But here’s what we find: most grandparents manage better than their families expect. The questions arrive by email, one at a time, at a frequency that suits their pace. They can reply directly to the email or log into their account. The interface is simple and clear.

And if they get stuck, they can email me. I’m Alyson… I run YourStory with my Brother David, and I reply to every email personally. I’ve helped plenty of grandparents who needed a bit of hand-holding at the start and were flying on their own within a week. Plus you can also have access to the book too.

Some families sit with their grandparent and type the answers for them while they talk. That works beautifully too. It becomes an afternoon together, a cup of tea, a conversation. Some of our customers say those afternoons were the best part of the whole experience.

The book your grandchildren will read one day

This is the bit that gets me, if I’m honest.

A life story book for grandparents isn’t just for the person writing it. It’s for everyone who comes after. Your children. Your grandchildren. People who haven’t been born yet.

Imagine your own grandchild, years from now, picking up a book and reading their great-grandmother’s account of what it was like growing up in the 1950s. In her own words. With her photos. With her sense of humour and her way of putting things.

That’s not just a book. That’s a bridge between generations. And it only exists because someone thought to ask.

The practical bits

YourStory is £149. One payment, no subscription. Extra copies are £50 each. There’s no deadline… your grandparent works at their own pace.

You can send it as a gift. We’ll send them everything they need to get started.

Before the book goes to print, they can ask me to look through it personally… a final check to catch anything that doesn’t look right.

Everything’s at yourstory.co.uk. If your grandparent has stories worth keeping… and I promise you, they do… this is how you keep them.
